Voiding Characteristics in Men with Sleep Apnea
Finkelman Cindy*, Phillip C. Ginsberg, Michael J. Metro, Richard C. Harkaway Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA
Introduction: Men with sleep apnea often report concomitant voiding symptoms. It is apparent that this population is often evaluated for their pulmonary issues while their nocturia and voiding symptoms are under-diagnosed and under-treated. The goal of this project was to evaluate voiding characteristics in men with sleep apnea Methods: 30 men with the diagnosis of sleep apnea, recruited from a sleep study clinic, completed AUASI questionnaires. Voiding characteristics were also divided into obstructive or irritative. The scores for these parameters were then correlated with age and weight. The questionnaires also investigated prior urological evaluation. Results: 30 men with a mean age of 51yrs (SD 11) and mean weight 257.43 lbs. (SD 45.37) were found to have a mean AUASI score of 16.57 (SD 7.54). 24 subjects reported moderate to severe voiding symptoms (AUASI ≥ 8), yet only 5 of the 24 men were evaluated by a urologist. Positive correlations were found between age and AUASI p<.0001, age and obstructive symptoms p<.0001, and between age and irritative symptoms p<.0075. However no correlations were revealed between age and nocturia p=.4483, weight and AUASI p=.6694, weight and nocturia p=.7952, weight and obstructive symptoms p=9563, nor weight and irritative symptoms p=.3995. Conclusion: 1. Nocturia is a consistent finding in men with sleep apnea regardless of age and weight. 2. Specific voiding symptoms are related to age but not to weight. 3. A high percentage of men with voiding symptoms and sleep apnea are not being evaluated by urologists.
