Female Sexual Dysfunction In Patients With Interstitial Cystitis: Evaluation Of Current Medical Therapy
Stanley Zaslau, Susan Saunders, Dale Riggs*, Barbara Jackson*, Stanley J. Kandzari West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV
Introduction: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC) is significant and well documented. The effects of IC-specific medications on FSD have not. The authors report the data on 1300 subjects indexed by the use of IC-specific medications and compare the degree of FSD associated with the disease. Methods: Domain values were obtained by using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), developed by Rosen et al. This 19-item questionnaire evaluated FSD in the following six domains: desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Data were analyzed on an item-for-item basis and by the six domains of FSD for these subjects. The respondents were sorted by the use of IC-specific medication (n=511) and the absence of such medication (Control, n=789). Results: The table below compared these data across the 6 domains measured by the FSFI. Conclusions: Significant differences existed in the domains of orgasm (p=0.013) and pain (p<0.001), as the respondents who took IC-specific medications reported the lower of the scores in the survey. The FSD in IC patients was significant and well documented. This dataset suggested that the need for more effective methods of treating not only IC, but the FSD with which it was associated, was warranted.
